TableAxe for Adobe InDesign

What does TableAxe do?

Simple answer: TableAxe splits large tables into smaller ones and joins separate tables together. This is functionality that InDesign doesn’t provide natively.

Instead of manually recreating tables or struggling with workarounds, TableAxe handles one-click table splitting and joining with intelligent row/column management.

To try it out: see Installation info further down the page.

Fill InDesign’s table gap

The missing functionality: InDesign has robust table creation and editing features, but it’s missing basic table management:

  • No way to split tables – Can’t break large tables into smaller sections
  • No table joining – Can’t combine separate tables into one

What TableAxe adds: table splitting and joining with one-click operation and intelligent handling of headers, footers, and formatting.

Perfect for these scenarios

  • Long data tables – Split large tables to fit across multiple pages or sections
  • Report formatting – Break quarterly data into monthly tables
  • Newsletter layouts – Split wide tables to fit narrow columns
  • Data organization – Combine related tables from different sources
  • Document restructuring – Reorganize existing table-heavy documents

How TableAxe works

Intelligent selection-based operation

  1. Select a row or column in the table you want to split or join
  2. Run the script – TableAxe automatically determines whether it needs to split or join
  3. Smart execution – Split or join happens with proper formatting preservation

Split operation

  • Select any body row (except body row 1) → Split table horizontally at that row
  • Select any column (except column 1) → Split table vertically at that column
  • Headers/footers preserved → Automatically duplicated in both resulting tables

Join operation

  • Select row 1 or column 1 → Attempt to join with the next table in the story
  • Smart validation → Checks compatibility before joining
  • Format matching → Ensures tables can be properly combined

Real-world examples

Large data table management

You have a 50-row financial table that needs to be split into quarterly sections for a report.

Without TableAxe: Manually copy/paste sections, recreate headers for each section, fix formatting inconsistencies, manage table borders and styling.

With TableAxe: Select row 13, run script. Select row 26 in the new second table, run script. Select row 39 in the third table, run script. Done – four perfectly formatted quarterly tables.

Multi-column layout adaptation

Your wide product comparison table doesn’t fit in a two-column newsletter layout.

Without TableAxe: Redesign the entire table structure or settle for tiny, unreadable text.

With TableAxe: Split the table vertically, creating two narrower tables that fit the column width perfectly.

Data consolidation

You have separate tables for each department that need to be combined into a master table.

Without TableAxe: Manually copy rows, ensure column structures match, fix formatting discrepancies.

With TableAxe: Place tables consecutively in a text frame, select row 1 of the first table, run script. Repeat for additional tables.

Smart features

Header and footer intelligence

  • Automatic preservation – Headers and footers appear in all split tables
  • Validation – Won’t split through header/footer rows
  • Merge checking – Ensures headers/footers match before joining

Format preservation

  • Cell styling maintained – Colors, fonts, alignments, placed images preserved

Error prevention

  • Compatibility checking – Prevents incompatible table joins
  • Clear feedback – Explains why operations can’t proceed
  • Undo-friendly – All operations can be reversed with standard undo

System requirements

  • InDesign 2023 or newer
  • Windows or Mac
  • PluginInstaller (free tool for installation and licensing)

Pricing

  • Fully functional without license – Use all features for free
  • License for $4 per computer per year – Show appreciation and support development
  • No feature restrictions – Same functionality whether licensed or not

Please consider the $4 license (seriously)

Here’s the reality: developing, testing, and maintaining TableAxe costs significantly more than $4.

The hosting, development tools, testing across multiple InDesign versions, customer support, and ongoing compatibility updates require substantial time and resources.

Your $4 doesn’t cover these costs.  But it does something equally important: it shows that this tool has value and is worth maintaining.

If nobody pays, this tool dies. Not because of greed, but because maintaining free tools without any signal of their value is unsustainable.

When users pay (even a small amount), it tells the developer “this solved a real problem for me” and “please keep it working when the next InDesign version breaks it.”

Consider it less like a software purchase and more like buying the developer a coffee and saying “thanks for saving me hours of frustration.”

Please consider adding a tip above the $4 if TableAxe saves you significant time.

The choice to pay $4 helps to keep tools like this alive for everyone.

Pro tips

Assign a keyboard shortcut: TableAxe is designed for speed – assign a keyboard shortcut for rapid table operations.

Test with sample document: Use the included sample file to understand how splitting and joining works before using on production documents.

Plan your splits: Think about where tables should break logically (after totals, between sections, etc.).

Check headers first: Ensure your header/footer rows are properly defined before splitting.

Why it’s (almost) free

TableAxe addresses a genuine gap in InDesign’s functionality. The optional $4 license serves two purposes:

  • Shows appreciation – Tells the developer this tool is valuable to you
  • Supports development – Encourages continued improvement and support
