Intro<\/h1>\n

How to get alerted when opening an InDesign\/InCopy document that contains notes.<\/p>\n

At the Creative Pro Week<\/a> 2018 in New Orleans, Anne-Marie Concepci\u00f3n<\/a> posted the following suggestion for the ‘People\u2019s Choice Script Challenge’:<\/p>\n

<\/a>I would like a script that would put up a big \u201cThere are Notes in this document\u201d flashing graphic (I\u2019d settle for an Alert dialog box) whenever I opened a file in InDesign (or InCopy) that had Notes in it. Bonus, it\u2019d have a View button that would jump to the first note, zoom in to 250% with the note icon centered on the screen, and open the Notes panel so I could read it and use the nav buttons there to jump to the next note.<\/em><\/p>\n

Challenge accepted!<\/p>\n

The following script should help with that:<\/p>\n

(Update 28-Feb-2019: v1.0.1: postpone the alert until various warning dialogs shown on document open have been dealt with by the user)<\/p>\n

Installing<\/h1>\n

First download the script using the link above.<\/p>\n

The downloaded file is in .zip compressed format. You’ll need to decompress it unless your computer already does it automatically for you.<\/p>\n

If all is well, you should end up with a file called ShowNotes.jsx<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This is an ExtendScript.<\/p>\n

Unlike most other scripts, it is not meant to be installed into the InDesign\/InCopy Scripts Panel<\/em> folder. Instead, it needs to go into the startup scripts<\/em> folder.<\/p>\n

A quick way to navigate to the startup scripts<\/em>\u00a0folder: first launch InDesign or InCopy.<\/p>\n

Bring up the Scripts<\/em> panel by means of the Window – Utilities – Scripts<\/em> menu item.<\/p>\n

Right-click the Application<\/em> folder on the Scripts<\/em> panel.<\/p>\n

Select Reveal in Finder<\/em>\u00a0(Mac) or Reveal in Explorer <\/em>(Windows) from the contextual menu.<\/p>\n

The Scripts<\/em> folder contents will appear.<\/p>\n

In that folder, you’ll find a folder called\u00a0startup scripts<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Copy or move the ShowNotes.jsx<\/em> script file into the startup scripts<\/em> folder.<\/p>\n

There might or might not be a file\u00a0ForceDirectory.txt<\/em>\u00a0inside the startup scripts<\/em> folder.\u00a0You can ignore that file. It is inert and has no function. If you want, you can safely delete\u00a0ForceDirectory.txt.<\/em><\/p>\n

Because the\u00a0startup scripts<\/em> folder is protected, the computer will complain a bit.<\/p>\n

On a Mac you will probably be asked for an administrator password. On most personal computers, the administrator is you<\/em>, so you can enter your own password.<\/p>\n

On computers that are administered by an I.T. department, you will need to ask the I.T. department for help to get the script installed.<\/p>\n

On my Mac it goes like this:<\/p>\n

And on Windows it looks similar, but it probably won’t ask for a password:<\/p>\n

VERY IMPORTANT<\/strong>: You must now restart InDesign or InCopy.<\/p>\n

Otherwise the script will not be activated.<\/p>\n

As InDesign or InCopy start up,\u00a0ShowNotes.jsx<\/em> script will run and install itself, waiting for you to open a document.<\/p>\n

When you open a document, it will look for the presence of notes, and will show a dialog if it finds any.<\/p>\n

Usage<\/h1>\n

Using the script is simple. When you open a document it will automatically check for notes.<\/p>\n

Tweaking<\/h1>\n

There are a few small tweaks that can be made.<\/p>\n

Open the script using a ‘real’ text editor program (like BBEdit, TextWrangler, NotePad, NotePad++, TextMate, Sublime…).<\/p>\n

Avoid using a word processor program like TextEdit, MS Word… to edit the script. Word processors often destroy scripts.<\/p>\n

There is a section near the start where you can tweak the script.<\/p>\n

Save the tweaked script back to the startup scripts<\/em> folder and restart InDesign or InCopy after making a tweak.<\/p>\n

You can change one or more of the words ‘true’ into ‘false’ (all lowercase) to turn off certain features of the script.<\/p>\n

Do not change or remove anything else.<\/p>\n

You can also change the zoom percentage from 250 to some other percentage. Do not include a ‘%’ sign!<\/p>\n

If the script stops working after being tweaked, simply re-download it and start over with a fresh copy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
