Rationale<\/h2>\n
I was at the CreativePro Week 2017<\/a> in Atlanta, and sat in on one of Russell Viers<\/a>‘ sessions.<\/p>\n He showed us how you can start from a spreadsheet, export the data in tabbed text format, import the data into InDesign, replace all tab characters by hard returns, then use a style setup\u00a0with styles that each have a ‘Next Style’ set, to format the whole dataset in one go.<\/p>\n It’s a cool technique, but it is not quite straightforward.<\/p>\n I felt there had to be an easier way to do simplified database publishing.<\/p>\n So, I set out to write a little tool that would make basic database import and styling a little bit easier.<\/p>\n Note that with simplicity come limitations. There are many things this tool won’t do, but it is a simple solution for a number of common scenarios.<\/p>\n Please do note\u00a0that AutoStyleTagger<\/em> has a few ‘satellite’ files. Also, the application does not have a nice-looking icon; that’s OK.<\/p>\n Do not separate<\/strong> the main application file (AutoStyleTagger<\/em> or AutoStyleTagger.exe<\/em>) from the other files and folders that come with it, like ContentTemplate.txt<\/em> and so on.<\/p>\n AutoStyleTagger<\/em>\u00a0will refuse to work if you do that and it will spit out nasty error messages.<\/p>\n If you want to see just one icon related to\u00a0AutoStyleTagger <\/em>in some handy location (e.g. the Desktop)\u00a0you should create an alias or shortcut to the application file, and\u00a0put that\u00a0alias or shortcut in the desired location.<\/p>\n In the screenshot below I am about to let go of my mouse, in order to create a shortcut to AutoStyleTagger.exe<\/em> on my desktop. I am holding the ‘Alt’ key. (On a Mac, I’d hold Command-Opt to achieve the same effect):<\/p>\n On Windows, do not try to use\u00a0AutoStyleTagger<\/em> without first un-zipping the download archive. Right-click the downloaded .zip file, then select the Extract All… menu item.<\/p>\n Then AutoStyleTagger<\/em>\u00a0can be used as follows:<\/p>\n You can use pretty much any\u00a0style names you want.
