{"id":3761,"date":"2011-09-05T22:43:10","date_gmt":"2011-09-06T05:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=3761"},"modified":"2011-09-05T22:43:45","modified_gmt":"2011-09-06T05:43:45","slug":"historylog-manual","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/rorohiko.com\/wordpress\/manuals\/historylog-manual\/","title":{"rendered":"HistoryLog Manual"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is a very simple tool that can perform two tasks:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>On every save, insert a simple &#8216;live&#8217; time stamp into a designated text frame<\/li>\n<li>Keep an automated log of file modifications to an InDesign document in another designated text frame<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Be aware that this tool depends on goodwill and cooperation between the members of the team &#8211; no attempt has been made to guard against any ill-willed user who refuses to use the tool properly. It is quite easy to mis-use this tool if you are so inclined. As a result, this tool will probably be most useful in small teams where there is full mutual trust between the team members.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The tool is very simple to use once a document has been prepared by designating one or two text frames to respectively keep the time stamp and\/or the document history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For both functions, the tool uses a\u00a0<em>tracking ID<\/em> &#8211; it is up to the user to decide what information to use for this\u00a0<em>tracking ID<\/em>. Most often this will be the user&#8217;s full name, initials, first name &#8211; whatever is most appropriate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The tool will auto-update a designated text frame (the\u00a0<em>timestamp<\/em> <em>box<\/em>) with a time stamp consisting of<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Document name<\/li>\n<li>Tracker ID<\/li>\n<li>Time and date of the last save<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The tool will also append a log entry at the end of a designated text frame (called the\u00a0<em>history box<\/em>) on each &#8216;open&#8217; and each &#8216;save&#8217; . The log entry consists of the tracking ID together with a time stamp. The\u00a0<em>history box<\/em> typically resides on your document&#8217;s pasteboard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Over time, the\u00a0<em>history box<\/em> accumulates a history of who has opened or saved the document, and when.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This tool is\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong> meant to be used for time tracking &#8211; it simply keeps track of who opened the document, and when &#8211; not for how long the document was edited.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Installation<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Please make sure you have a copy of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/apidtoolassistant.html\" target=\"_self\">APID ToolAssistant<\/a><\/em> plug-in installed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Make sure you install the proper plug-in for your version of InDesign. InDesign CS, CS2, CS3 and CS4 plug-ins are mutually incompatible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you already have an <em>APID ToolAssistant <\/em>plug-in installed (e.g. because you use one of our other plug-ins), make sure it is up-to-date.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>APID ToolAssistant<\/em> used to be called &#8216;<em>Active Page Item Runtime<\/em>&#8216; &#8211; if you have any copies of<em> Active Page Item Runtime<\/em> or <em>Active Page Item Developer<\/em> installed, please remove them, and replace them with <em>APID ToolAssistant<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When installing plug-ins make sure you copy plug-in<em> files<\/em>, not the folders they are contained in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content\">HistoryLog will continue to work when the <em>APID ToolAssistant<\/em> demo expires.<br \/>i.e <strong>You do NOT need to purchase a license for <em>APID ToolAssistant<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Copy the<em> HistoryLog.spln<\/em> into the same folder as the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/apidtoolassistant.html\" target=\"_self\">APID ToolAssistant<\/a><\/em> plug-in you installed (typically that will be the InDesign Plug-Ins folder). Don&#8217;t worry about the icon of the .spln file: it might not be a &#8216;regular&#8217; icon, and that&#8217;s OK.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Usage<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Below a step-by-step instruction on how to add a\u00a0<em>history<\/em> or a\u00a0<em>timestamp box<\/em> to your document.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To keep a log of file manipulations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a text frame somewhere. A\u00a0<em>history box<\/em> would typically be created in the pasteboard area of page 1; a\u00a0<em>timestamp box<\/em> would instead sit on the first page, last page, or on a master page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/historylog\/hislo_01newtextbox.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"103\" height=\"131\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Select the text frame using the selection tool (black arrow tool). Make sure you are\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong> in text selection mode.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/historylog\/hislo_02switchtoselect.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"231\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the\u00a0<em>Window &#8211; Automation &#8211; Script Label<\/em> menu (in InDesign CS2 or CS3) or the<em>Window &#8211; Scripting &#8211; Script Label<\/em> menu (in InDesign CS) to bring up the palette where you can define a label for the text frame.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/historylog\/hislo_03scriptlabel.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"416\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Label the frame either with the word\u00a0<em>history<\/em> (all lowercase) or\u00a0<em>timestamp<\/em> (all lowercase).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/historylog\/hislo_04nameandclick.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"291\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>After typing the label, click somewhere else in the document window to deselect the box.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/historylog\/hislo_05deselected.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"279\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Close and save the document.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/historylog\/hislo_06closeandsave.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"393\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Re-open the document; do some modifications and save. Either on open or on save or both, a dialog for the\u00a0<em>tracking ID<\/em> will appear. Fill in your name or whatever text you want to use as a tracking identification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/historylog\/hislo_07reopen.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"86\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>You&#8217;ll want to adjust the width of the history text box and its tab settings to make sure the log entries each fit on a single line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rorohiko.com\/historylog\/hislo_08resize.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"226\" \/><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This operation creates a &#8216;live&#8217; text box.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you have a\u00a0<em>history box<\/em>, each time the file is opened or saved, a dialog for a\u00a0<em>tracking ID<\/em> will be opened.
